Christy Martin: The Greatest Female Boxer of all Time?

Many people think that boxing is a sport for men only. We idolized and remember the boxers to the extent that we use their names to name our kids after them. We watched them brutalized their opponents in the ring to win the bout and the fans as well. People are talking about their upcoming fights and recent activities. Ask the children and the average boxing fans about boxing and they will tell you a lot of names. But these names are all men like Manny Pacquiao, Muhammad Ali, and Oscar Dela Hoya to name a few.

Women boxers are also exciting as their male counterparts. Ironically, these women never reached the popularity and recognition that they deserved by promoting this sport of boxing through fighting each other. The closest among women’s boxers that almost break the barrier that separates men and women are Christy Martin y Salters most commonly known as “The Coal Miner's Daughter” and Laila Ali as of now because Laila Ali is still campaigning in the super middleweight class.

Christy Martin started her boxing career at the age of 21. Her first bout ended in a draw with Andrea Buchanan. One month later she knocks out Buchanan in the second round of their rematch. After one more bout she faced Andrea DeShong and lost by decision in a five round bout. She racked nineteen wins in a row including two wins over Jamie Whitcomb. Her first entrance to the world title came on October 15, 1993, against Beverly Szymansky. She became champion in women's Jr. Welterweight when she knocks out Szymansky in the third round. Martin defended her title six times. She then matched to Deirdre Gogarty On March 16, 1996, in what many boxing fans considered a great fight where Showtime aired the bout. She won by a decision and became a celebrity profile after that fight. She was featured in Sports Illustrated magazine shortly after the dramatic fight.

Martin won more eight bouts beating DeShong once again. She lost her title to Sumya Anani in 1998 in a ten round contest by decision. She added nine more wins in a row beating the likes of Belinda Laracuente, Kathy Collins and Sabrina Hall. Martin beat Mia St. John in her last bout from welterweight by a decision in a ten round contest. Rumors started to circulate about her plan to fight the undefeated Laila Ali (the daughter of the great Muhammad Ali) in the middleweight class.

Finally the announcement was made on June 30, 2003. Many boxing pundits viewed the fight as a mismatched due to size differences of the two fighters. Laila who stands (5'10", 162 lbs) while Christy stands 5'4½ and weights 147 lbs on fight night proves fatal to Christy Martin. She lost by a knock out in the fourth round to Ali. Her plan to fight Lucia Rijke never materialized due to Rijker’s injury. It was dubbed as a “Million Dollar Lady" fight. In her last fight she lost to Holly Holm a 23-year-old southpaw from Albuquerque, New Mexico via unanimous decision 100-90 (twice) and 98-92.

Women Inventors: Let us know them!

Fe

Bette Nesmith Graham was a Dallas executive secretary, a divorced woman and a single mother of a boy. This efficient and hardworking woman wanted to become an artist and never in her life thoughts that she will become an inventor. She was working as an executive secretary that was
proud of her work. Typing errors was her common problem. Graham remembered that artists mix some colors to cover for their mistakes on canvass. By that, she came up with the idea of using the same method as the artists does. She used water based paint (Latex) and mixed it together to match the color of the stationery she was using. Her boss never noticed that she was using this water based paint to correct her typing errors. Her friend, another secretary saw the liquid she invented and ask for some to correct her typing mistakes also. Soon all the secretaries in the building were using the water based paint that she named “Mistake Out” on 1951.

Mary Anderson

Prior to the manufacture of Henry Ford's Model A, Mary Anderson was granted her first patent for a window cleaning device in November of 1903. Her invention could clean snow, rain, or sleet from a windshield by using a handle inside the car. Her goal was to improve driver vision during stormy weather - Mary Anderson invented the windshield wiper.

During a trip to New York City, Mary Anderson noticed that streetcar drivers had to open the windows of their cars when it rained in order to see, as a solution she invented a swinging arm device with a rubber blade that was operated by the driver within the vehicle via a lever. The windshield wipers became standard equipment on all American cars by 1916.

Boxing at its Best

Fans Corner

An avid fan of Philippine national treasure Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao sent me an E-mail and asked me to publish his comment from one of my articles in Triond. I have decided not to publish his comment due to some reasons; first, it might create a heated argument in my article. Second, his post is too long and may occupy a lot of space that I have just reserved for short comments. By deleting his post, I earned a lot of criticism from different people. By giving my second thought, I realized that I was a completely idiot by deleting his post. I forgot that everyone is entitled to voice out their opinion no matter what is it, whether it is subjective or biased. It was too late for me to put his comment again in my article for I already deleted it. Fortunately, I copied and saved it before I deleted it in the webpage hoping that it is not too late to correct my mistake. I posted his comment here to prove that I'm sincere to my words and regretted my action. Here's his comment:

Dear Editor,

I don't understand why many people are discrediting Manny Pacquiao by looking at David Diaz and Oscar DLH fights. Is it because Manny beat them? Remember that Manny is the #1 pound for pound and losing from p4p fighter doesn't mean you're a fluke or 2nd class fighter. David Diaz will never become a champion in the lightweight division if he's just a fluke.

This guy knocked out Santa Cruz who battered Joel Casamayor. And I don't understand people keeps making excuses that Dela Hoya got beaten by Manny because he was dehydrated. What if Manny lost that fight? The credit will go to Dela Hoya and he will be the #1 pound for pound. He fought JMM twice and beat him twice. Although, it did not ends in a fashion where blood seeker fans wanted to end the two bouts. Does Manny need to kill his opponents in the ring just to prove that he won those fights? Grow up people! A win against Casamayor who is a real washed up fighter is not a reason to put Marquez above all lightweight fighters. Look at the fights between Juan Diaz and Marquez and you will see that Diaz just got careless in the later rounds a sort of overconfidence.

We cannot change the fact that Manny sent Marquez in the canvass for 4 times. Can Marquez do that to Manny? They had their moments during their fights, but at the end of the day what you will remember was the knockdowns and that separates the fights in even terms.

Ok! I understand that knocking your opponent down on the canvass is not the only way to win the fights. You should dominate the bout or get at least more than half of the twelve rounds to win the decisions. If so, then let’s go to the scorecards. The judges’ scorecards are based on the following; a knockdown will score 8 to 10 in favor of the fighter who knocked his opponent down. And for extra information; the judges can give the same score even if there was no knockdown during the round. For some reasons; the other fighter clearly dominated the round or the fighter dominated the round plus the referee deducted a point to the other fighter for unsportsmanlike conduct. The judges saw the two bouts as Pacquiao the winner. They may see something that we could not see in our screens.

Marquez fought Barrera and did not win convincingly either. In fact he was floored by Barrera and he was lucky that Barrera received a deduction from unsportsmanlike. If not that, Barrera can win the bout. Aside from this, Barrera was not in his prime anymore when he fought Marquez and look at the result? It was so close. Whilst Manny fought Barrera in his prime and knock him out convincingly. Marquez could not even surpass Chris John.
